Embracing Kaizen on the Slopes: How Carv Incrementally Elevates Your Skiing Performance

Updated: Mar 19

The Japanese term Kaizen is an idea at the forefront of improvement and innovation. Translating to "continuous improvement", Kaizen stresses the idea that frequent small improvements lead to a large impact over time. Kaizen principles are widely adopted all over the world and are embedded into the culture of many businesses and industries. And although popular in business, what I think is great about Kaizen is that it can apply to so much more. Everything in life can use a little fine tuning. And minor adjustments can lead to drastic improvements. In fact, Kaizen is the reason I started this blog. I wanted a way to improve my writing skills while learning more about two of my passions: technology and skiing. Though challenging initially, each new post has become a bit easier to craft, hopefully improving in quality each time.

In the ski industry, many companies have integrated Kaizen into their culture, constantly refining their technology and business processes. Many of these companies also develop products that enable skiers to adopt Kaizen, as their products help skiers make incremental improvements with every run. A prime example of this is Carv, a cutting-edge device designed to enhance skiing performance through real-time feedback and coaching. It resembles a shoe sole and it fits snugly between the ski boot's plasctic sole and the inner liner. Despite being less than 3 millimeters thick, it is jam-packed with technology: 72 pressure sensors, an accelerometer, a gygroscope , and a magnetometer. This technology gives the device the ability to measure 13 different metrics 20 times per second. The data is sent to the Carv mobile app via Bluetooth, compared against a database of sensor data from 350 million ski turns, and gives you real-time feedback on your performance. Furthermore, you can connect the Carv app to a ear buds or headphones and a virtual "coach" can use your performance data to provide you with tips and special instructions on how to improve while your skiing! It's truly a remarkable device that emboides Kaizen in skiing.

Carv exemplifies the essence of Powder Innovation - a commitment to utilizing cutting-edge technology to enhance the skiing experience. I'm excited to follow their progress as they continue to make improvements to the device, and I'm looking forward to the opportunity of one day wearing Carv when I'm on the slopes.
