Comparing Off-Season Ski Training Equipment: SkiErg vs. Rollerskis vs. Skier's Edge vs. Electric Skis

We just hit the 80-day countdown to the average first measurable snow in Colorado. While this is exciting, it leaves the question: what to do in the next 100 days to make sure I'm in top shape going into opening day.


Every summer, people go through the same cycle: enthusiasm in July, guilt in September, quad failure on the third run of opening day. So this year, I wanted to do and use my engineering background to analyze the equipment instead.


Here's the honest framing that helped me: alpine skiing asks your body for four things that summer sports mostly don't. A big aerobic engine, a huge amount of eccentric leg strength (muscles producing force while lengthening, which is what your quads do all the way down the fall line), lateral movement under load, and constant balance corrections from your feet. No single machine gives you all four. Every product below solves for one or two, and the interesting part is watching where each one cheats.


The SkiErg: Buying an Aerobic Engine for $850

Concept2's SkiErg is the least glamorous thing on this list and probably the best value. It's the same flywheel and PM5 monitor as their rower, turned vertical, with a synthetic drive cord and two handles. $850, 41 pounds, aluminum frame, runs on two D-cell batteries that the spinning flywheel keeps topped up. Wall-mount it and it takes about 16 inches of depth; the floor stand is another $220.

It was built for cross-country skiers, and yes, the specific motion is nordic double-poling, not a GS turn. That doesn't matter as much as people think. What you're buying is a metabolically brutal, zero-impact way to build aerobic base while working glutes, hamstrings, lats, triceps, and core in a chain. The thing I appreciate as an engineer is that the PM5 self-calibrates. Air resistance changes with altitude and humidity, so the monitor measures the flywheel's deceleration between strokes and computes actual work in watts rather than trusting a damper setting. That means my session in Denver is directly comparable to a session at sea level, and to the Concept2 world rankings. Honest units are underrated.


Rollerskis: The Most Specific and Most Dangerous Option

If you want the movement pattern itself, rollerskis are the closest thing to skiing on pavement. The market is mature and Nordic-focused: a Swenor Fibreglass runs around €410 with 70 mm rubber wheels on a 730 mm shaft, and Marwe's Skating 620 FX sits near €525 with 100 mm polyurethane wheels. Replacement wheels are roughly $50 apiece, which is the number nobody mentions upfront.

Two things to understand before buying. First, wheel resistance is a spec, not an accident — manufacturers publish resistance classes, and clubs often standardize on a slower wheel so athletes train effort rather than speed. Second, most rollerskis have no brakes. A speed-reducer accessory exists and is worth every cent, but the failure mode here is a downhill with a car at the bottom, and I'd rather be blunt about that than sell you a fun summer hobby with a hidden risk profile.


For an alpine skier specifically, rollerskis are a big investment in a movement pattern you don't actually use on snow. I love them for the aerobic work and the balance demand. I wouldn't call them essential.


Skier's Edge: Paying for Lateral Loading

This is the machine built explicitly for us, and it's been around almost four decades. The Skier's Edge is a spring-loaded carriage on a curved rail that throws you side to side while you resist the deceleration at each end of the travel. Elite models start at $3,995; the Pro starts at $5,695; the Gold package with the BootMaster platform — which lets you train in your actual ski boots — is $7,995. That's a lot of money, and the reviews from serious skiers are genuinely mixed.

My read on the engineering: it's legitimate at the one thing it targets. TJ Lanning's line about it replicating "the essential eccentric loading that takes place in every turn" is the accurate description of what the machine does. You're decelerating your body mass laterally, hundreds of times, without impact. That's hard to reproduce with dumbbells.


What it can't give you is edge angle or ground reaction force. In a real high-speed carve you're pulling well over 1 g against a ski that's bending into a reverse camber, and your ankle and knee are managing an edge that can catch. The carriage runs on a rail. It trains the muscular pattern, not the balance problem. If the price makes you wince, that gap is the reason to keep wincing.


SKWHEEL: The One That Actually Carves

A genuine new option is SKWHEEL, a French startup out of Normandy that showed at CES 2026 and won the Gold Medal at the Concours Lépine International the same year. Their second-generation product, the Peak S, is a two-wheeled powered ski with independent braking on both feet, 28–34 miles of range, and a €1,790 pre-order price (€1,990 list) against a stated end-of-October 2026 delivery. Four-plus years of R&D and six patents filed.


Two pieces of that are interesting to me. The first is the patented CARV-E1 pivot on the front wheel, which converts body lean into steering angle, no handlebars or truck geometry, just your center of mass doing the work the way it does on snow. The second, and the one I didn't expect, is a patented calf lock that they claim delivers the same resistance and force feedback as a ski boot cuff without the rigidity. If true, it's the only product on this list engaging your lower leg the way a boot does, which is where an enormous amount of real ski feel actually lives.


The honest caveat: top speed is a claimed 37 mph, software-limited to 25 km/h for road-legal use, and the motors mean this isn't cardio training in any meaningful sense — the electrons are doing the work your legs would have. But it may be the only thing here that lets you practice edge-to-edge movement in July, and I'd very much like to get my hands on a pair.


The Boring Answer That Beats All of It

Which matches what coaches have been saying forever. Loaded jumping lunges and squat jumps train eccentric deceleration better than a $6,000 carriage. A $60 balance board trains the ankle corrections that a rail-mounted machine deliberately removes. A slide board costs almost nothing and gives you lateral work with real friction and a real edge to push against.


So here's my ranking by dollars-per-actual-benefit: bodyweight and barbell eccentric work first, a balance board second, a SkiErg third if you have the space and want structured aerobic data, and the expensive specialty machines only after those are habits. The machine is not the variable. The loading pattern is — and as I wrote in the Kaizen post, small consistent inputs compound. That's as true in a garage gym in August as it is on a groomer in January.
